Adding a new place, location or POI? Go with the skinny or the whole enchilada?

By skinny I mean just adding the business name, location, correct the pin if necessary, and add a couple of supporting photos. By the whole enchilada, I mean adding the above, telephone number, website, and any other information about the business that you can confirm.

Recently I was talking to some other Guides about what factors determine how long it usually takes to get an edit for adding a new place to Maps approved.

The discussion started in an unrelated topic. ErmesT suggested that I start a new topic on the subject. So here we go.

Here are links to the existing replies that are in the Re: 318 Stars AvgStarViewsDay (August 2023) topic, with a very brief description of what was said,

Perhaps @ErmesT or @MortenCopenhagen will move them to this topic.

Rednewt74 asked MortenCopenhagen about only adding minimal info when adding a new POI.

8/19/23

MortenCopenhagen replied to Rednewt74 that he had never made such a recommendation, that his method is to gather and add as much info as possible when adding a new POI. He suggests that it was ErmesT that recommended the minimalist approach.

Rednewt74 replied to MortenCopenhagen and asking additional questions

ErmesT replied to Rednewt74 and suggested creating a separate topic for this discussion. He says both methods work but explains his thoughts behind beginning with minimal information.

Rednewt74 replied to ErmesT & MortenCopenhagen and explained his current opportunity to add several POI and agreed to start a new topic on the subject

ErmesT replied to Rednewt74 regarding an early experience with an LG that had a “Foolproof” method for getting edits approved immediately.

@tony_b replied to
Rednewt74 saying his approvals are usually very quick and uses the method as MortenCopenhagen does

Tony_b and MortenCopenhagen are of the school of thought that you should include all the information that you have when first adding the POI. ErmesT is of the opinion that you should add just the minimum and then go back and have additional information.

I’ve been doing it both ways, and for me having just the minimum seems to highly improve the chance of immediate approval. I then go back and add the other information that I have, and how long that approval will take varies considerably. I prefer knowing right away that the POI edit was accepted, and am willing to take the time to go back to add the other information.

Which way do you do it?

I hope other guides will jump in and write about their positive and negative experiences and their thoughts on how to speed up and improve their approval rates.

I have a question for other guides: How long do you wait for an edit that hasn’t been approved to resubmit the edit? Assuming you are sure of your information.

Good question @Rednewt74

Two years ago I tried to make an edit and it was rejected as “Not Accepted”. This was repeated three times, one week apart and then I stopped trying.

Recently I saw new evidence that could be used to support my claim, but when I checked the map I found that someone else had been successful in making the edit.

@tony_b ,

I actually don’t mind if it is rejected, because then you can decide if you want to try again, like you did.

What is a pain is when it just hangs there as “pending” ; do you resubmit it and how long should you wait?

@Annaelisa ,

Someone was definitely asleep. I had one company that had two different locations listed as one address in their business profile. Once I got them to remove the second address, I was able to add the second location to Maps. It always surprises me how many business listings are not claimed by their owner. Seems to me to be an easy and Powerful marketing tool. On the other hand if the business is heavily involved in their Maps profile it can make it harder to do edits or get a your photos featured.

I was walking through Brattleboro, VT today and found a new business opening. I took some photos, spoke to the owner. I went home and all evening I’ve been getting this error message.

What the heck??

@Rednewt74 I don’t think I’ve generally resubmitted if it said “pending”. But of course in my earlier times before discovering the Top100 program by @AdamGT it didn’t matter to me as I wasn’t chasing points and views to get on a Leaderboard.

I typically prefer the skinny or lite version, when it comes to Adds @Rednewt74

  • I will take a photo and center the location or signage, as best as possible.
  • I then utilize “Add a missing place” so the app places the pin directly where I’m located.
  • I then fill all the required boxes: Name; Category; Address.
  • Under “Add more details” I will select and add the photo.
  • I then hit “Submit”

I will add the hours or website, if the information is readily available. However, at least 80% of my Adds are from submitting the three required and a photo.

I will do a quick analysis of my most recent attempts and determine a “success” rate, then edit here.

I’ve attempted to add 11 places since July 12, 2023. All have been accepted.

All had only photos, in addition to the three requirements. 2 had hours added. 1 had website added.
