Here in Kuwait, gulf countries and the Middle East, we have a guest room in our houses for gatherings, but its for men only. In Kuwait we call it D****ewaniya and In the Middle East like Saudi Arabia and the rest of gulf countries they call it Majlis and they both have the same meaning but just different names, its part of our culture here.
Majlis are ‘sitting places’ where community members gather to discuss local events and issues, exchange news, receive guests, socialize and be entertained. The Majlis is where the community gathers to resolve problems, pay condolences and hold wedding receptions.

Most of people here in Kuwait have their D****ewaniya’s under many different categories such as coffee shop, cafe, restaurant, hotel or even apartment building which is incorrect.
So my suggestion is to have a Dewaniya/Majlis option so people wouldn’t be confused anymore and that will help google maps to be better and more suitable for different cultures around the world.
i hope that i got lucky and delivered the message in a very nice and helpful way, and since i haven’t seen anyone talking about it, so i had to mention here in theCommunity.
You did the right thing by suggesting it here on connect and thank you. It’s all about making the maps better. The explanation is quite clear too.
We had an idea exchange board which was closed down of recent here on connect.Nevertheless ideas are still welcome but on the “How tos” board. Would you mind changing the label of this post to “How tos” please?
In that way some GM might have a look and follow up on it. Endeavour to keep sharing your part of the world with us.
in the western culture there is a similar institution, when men are gathering for socializing and business/networking purposes: a Gentlemen’s club (Wikipedia)
So, according to this in Maps there are the categories “club” or “social club”.
A. that there is no formal membership intented, as it is usual in a western style club. However maybe there is a kind of informal membership, i.e. you might need to have any relationship/connection to the host or a friend of the host.
B. a more universal character because it’s a society-wide phenomen, for that the UNESCO heritage and what would justify an own category assigned to it. In the west instead its character is more special i.e. only a minority is a member of any club.
Btw: in India there are these clubs, too, due to the former British presence, and are called Gymkhana.
The Majlis instead seems to be larger, so maybe the category “community center” would be suitable.
Beside this there is another facility-related category “event venue” what might fit to a Dewaniya aswell.
It’s nice to see post about suggestion by you regarding new category. In northern part of Pakistan, people have something similar but they call this room or hall by different names like “Ootaq” , “Chopal” “Baythak”
I’m tagging here Connect Moderator @JanVanHaver who is expert in Google maps Categories, let’s see what he says about it.
@Mubrk that would indeed justify an additional category - you have provided the necessary input (argumentation & picture), so now it’s simply a matter of getting the idea escalated to the appropriate team. To do so, I am tagging Google Moderator @MashaPS
If you want to get regular updates on the new categories being added, you can always check this overview post.
