Add Photo vs. Photo Update?

Hi all,

I have a question since there are TWO ways to add photos (and maybe videos too) to Google Maps via mobile, why should I use one over the other? What’s the difference?

Hello @Benjet415

To use the first one If it’s the first photo or photos of the place that will be suitable. I have added the first photo of 501 POIs according to my profile account figures

Now the second, It’s as simple as it sounds. An update photo is an updated look(Photo) of the place. Different from the old ones that have been uploaded to the POI

.maybe a new colour of paint, maybe a newly added feature etc.

Although I must say I haven’t used it very much but I have used it.

To the best of my knowledge anyway.

Cheers

Hi @Benjet415 nice to meet you.

In addition to what has been said,

The great thing about adding a photo on that updates is; it gives you the option to 'share some news, which is more than a caption. Anyone who visits a POI can instantly click on the updates Tab and see what’s happening in recent times at that location and read what others are saying.

All the best,

Happy Guiding

Hey @Benjet415 ,

I think I found some information on this in Google’s Help Center on Maps.

Post photo updates of a place

On your mobile device, you can post photo updates of a place. These updates are visual posts that you contribute to so that you can share updates about a place, like:

  • Changes to business hours
  • Seasonal menus
  • New products or services
  • Renovations
  • Exhibits
  • COVID-19 updates

For places that have multiple photo updates, the most recent update shows up first.

A follow up question:

Have you used this feature much?

If so, do you notice an increase in views on the updates photos over your standard review post photos?

Hi @Benjet415

Please check the reply by @Skeeter , that clear explain the scope of updating photos. As he gave the correct answer, also supported by an official documentation, and the answer can help others with the same question, I am flagging his reply as the solution of the post.

To know more about this feature please read: How do I mark comments as solutions?.

To give you some visual support, I am sharing some of the Photo Updates added by me

I recently asked this same question. I must have failed to do a search first and when adding the topic it didn’t find any matches.

Very useful info. I like the idea of adding an new date and info at the top. Here is the post I wrote with some great replies.

On a possibly unrelated note, I have recently found that deleting photos from a review (not the review itself ) will change the date of the review to the date of the deletion. I found this when I was removing some old photos and I didn’t realize that some had been added through a review.
