Accuracy matters!

Interesting places, first time visits, food, photos, reviews…all of these are my favorite when it comes to sharing on Google Maps. Well I guess that’s applicable to all Local Guides.

But my preferred favorite is fixing incorrect information on Google Maps.

I admit I am a bit too serious about the accuracy of the location (blame it on my love for GPS & Navigation). Google Maps makes it really easy for anyone to add a new place by providing few basic info. While the info may be quite correct, I often come across listings where the location marker is ‘not where it should have been’!

Though its common to find a location tagged a few blocks off the actual location, I have come across places tagged amusingly ‘way off the target’.

For example –

  • A business appeared right in the middle of the Runway 14-32 of Mumbai airport.
  • A Motel was tagged in the middle of the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway…right in the middle of the road.
    and the latest…
  • A Mobile Phone Shop from Udupi, Karnataka appeared 35 km away floating in the Arabian Sea.

I am most happy to fix these issues…always.

Apart from fixing the location, providing additional info, confirming the web address and other contact data is a regular exercise for me on Google Maps.

Since I personally depend a lot on Google Maps, even in my own city, I believe a stranger looking for help should not suffer due to inaccurate location or information.

For me…accuracy matters and I am doing my tiny bit to make Google Maps better.

That mobile phone shop probably had customers that really want to make an effort to visit the shop… Having to swim 35 km in the open sea!

But seriously, great LG attitude @taureanator !
