Accessible Store Near Me: Shwapno/স্বপ্ন

Front view of Shwapno

As part of One Accessibility advocacy, we shall share information about disability issues, inclusion, and or accessibility features on Maps. Look out every week for this enlightening post.

It is one thing to have a store or business near you and another thing for it to be accessible for everyone. Stores should provide an all-encompassing service for non-disabled and disabled customers. For the month of February, the One Accessibility team would be spotlighting PwD friendly stores near us. You can read two other previous posts on this theme: the first one here by @EmekaUlor and the second one here by @Erna_LaBeau

A brief of the store:

In this post, I will talk about Shwapno, which is the nearest accessible store to me. It is not as big as any other super shop. It is one of the popular shopping destinations in my area. It is situated just beside the road. Though it has not any specific parking area, it has a wide space with the same height as the car. So, any PwD can easily get down from the car in front of the store. There is a ramp that leads to the main entrance of the store. Inside the store, rows are wide enough to move with a wheelchair inside. Staffs are quite helpful to any PwD.

What it sells:

This shop sells various kinds of items that we need every day. Vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, milk & grocery items, fashion items e.g., shirts, pants, saree, shoes, wristwatch, sunglasses, perfume, etc. are sold here. Various kinds of kitchen and home appliances are sold here. Various kinds of imported goods are also sold here and they are popular among the customers. During the pandemic, it started selling goods online and started home delivery. This home delivery system makes this store more popular in my area.

What Local Guides say about it:

In google maps, you will find many positive reviews on this shop. Some of them are given below:

Shwapno Life is one of the best mega shops in Bangladesh. I love to buy my groceries and clothing from Shwapno life. Because I can get everything in one store here. Fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meat are available at Shwapno.

Discover a world of freshness, warm service, and value with over 60 outlets, Shwapno is the largest grocery chain in Bangladesh and Best Retail Brand in the country. As part of the Shwapno family, your satisfaction and wellbeing are what we work diligently to ensure. Most of all, we want to always leave you with a smile, whether you visit our stores or order online, and we are happy to serve you in whatever way we can. So expect more. Positive-I think, best super shop in Dhaka. many types of county-made & foreign products r found their price is OK. various kinds of fishes r found there like lobster etc. many foreign dry fruits jars & raw foreign fruits r available. beautiful & helpful staffs r worked there. negative-there is no restaurant or cafe.

Customers are in the queue at the counter.

Do you have an accessible store near you? Did you leave a review to help PwDs that may want to go there on their own?

@MukulR My city Minsk is a capital, so accessibility question isn’t a question which stays out of consideration here.

One of nice examples is the bank not far from my house.

Big shopping malls have wide elevators with a wide entrance especially for wheelchairs (and ordinary baby carriages).

Almost all sidewalks have a slight slope for a convenient walking for strollers and bicycles.

Here the entrance to the subway, equipped by rampant (I haven’t a photo of the rampant itself):

and entrance to the park (Museum of stones)

Some streets (it’s a pity but they are rare) are equipped by special sound traffic light (having different sounds for green, yellow and red colours of traffic light) and wayfinding detectable warning tiles for easy road crossing by blind people.

Of course all mentioned is not everywhere, though it becomes more and more popular. A lot of shops haven’t convenient accessible entrance till now, and many are completely inaccessible to the disabled, for example this beauty salon.

Thanks a lot for all the nice photos and description @OlgaKlimchik . I think, to have or not to have accessible features in an infrastructure depends on the mentality of the people who own that. In our country. most of the government buildings are not yet fully accessible. Though our government is working seriously on this issue. They are adding accessible facilities where it is possible, and in most of the new projects, they are adding it from the beginning. In the private sector, the situation is worse. Some companies are adding accessible features in their projects but they are not more. But the situation is changing positively, that is the only point for hope. Thanks once again for your nice comments. Stay safe.
