I am quite often in Tallinn. And I want to share with you how thanks to the public transport system, Tallinn becomes accessible.
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. The public transport system is well developed here. You can get to any point of the city by bus, trolleybus or tram.
Many public transport vehicles are equipped for the needs of people with disabilities. There are handrails, a special seats with seat belts and a buttons to warn the driver. The stickers on the doors of an equipped vehicle indicate accessibility. The spacious entrance area are roomy for a wheelchair or pram, perhaps even two. There are routes are fully equipped with accessible buses in Tallinn.
All public transportation goes strictly according to the schedule which is available in the app Trafi
It’s very important that you can find out exactly the arrival time of the accessible bus (trolleybus, tram). If you are at a stop, there is a timetable with the arrival time accessible bus is marked with a blue line. If you use the app Trafi, there is a sign for accessible public transportation.
Surely, the Google Maps is actively supporting accessibility. Creating the route around Tallinn, we choose public transportation, we find the right one for us, there is the timetable for this route. The Google Maps show us the appropriate options where the arrival time accessible bus is marked with a sign. You can see it in the screenshots.
This is a great post @JaneBurunina ! It is great to see how frequent the schedule is for the bus. Does your city also have underground or a subway system too?
It is great to see everyone can ride ride mass transit or public transportation, instead of cars. Less traffic, less pollution. Good for the environment.
I agree with you, the schedule is very convenient for passengers. Not once convinced that the Tallinn public transport system is well organized!
Really, Tallinn city authorities are doing everything to reduce the number of cars in the historic Old Town. All historical sights can be reached by public transportation. Also there are many accommodations for tourists within walking distance of historical sites.
By the way, Tallinn is one of the smallest European capitals. The population is about 440,000 people. There is not so crowded. Therefore, the city doesn’t have an underground.
