During this World Cup I could attend a “couple” of matches in Mexico and the US and you know, as a Local Guide, noticing accessibility features becomes almost automatic the moment you enter a place, here are some of the features available at the stadiums I visited:
Accessible Seating: This is the most basic one, every stadium must have accessible seating options to be selected as a host stadium for the World Cup, walking through them I could see these:
MobilityAssistance: Some stadiums offered Wheelchair escorts right after scanning your ticket, helping anyone who requested assistance to get to their seat. Ramps and elevators were also available in every stadium.
Closed Captioning (CC) and Sign Language Commentary: Closed Captioning was displayed in the ribbon boards and also you could scan a QR code to open it in a website where you could select your preferred language. Sign Language Commentary could be accessed in the FIFA app in the stadium information.
Sensory Room: Inside, noise was considerably reduced and it had tactile boards, screens with animations and relaxing music.
Haptic boards and Audio Descriptive Commentary (ADC): Maybe you’ve seen these on videos during last year’s Club World Cup, these tablets have a mini version of the football field, it vibrates to show the ball’s location and has touch points in every goal that react when a team scores. Combined with the narration of everything happening in the field, using the “FIFA Audio Description App” allows blind or low-vision fans to enjoy every match.
Attending the World Cup has been one of the best experiences of my life and I’m glad that all these accessibility features allow everyone to be part of the Beautiful Game.
