I am very proud to have been selected as a Guiding Star, thanks to the help of many people.
To increase the value of Guiding Star, I would like to see icons and other items that would adorn my profile picture.
This includes past recipients.
Is there anything from google?
Or are we free to create our own images?

first of all very congratulations for being selected as one of our Guiding Star 2022, well done!
Thank you for your question, the answer is simple. You can create anything you wish as far you as you are not using any logo, font, text from Google. The Local Guides, Guiding Star and all related official materials are Google brand identity and is reserved for official use only. Do not use any logo, pin, or any other Google imagery in any of your online or offline materials without expressed written permission.
About creating your own graphics you might find useful what @AdrianLunsong created for Guiding Stars 2021 by created customized graphics exactly to celebrate and share awareness, not infringing any Google imagery rule, like this one below:

As you can see I use the image with background from the GuidingStars presentation as my new profile pic. I mean I provided the photo myself! So I’m very certain that we can use the imagery we provided and that they sent to us.
But the Icon you inserted in your post, would proabably be protected.
Feel free to tag a Google moderator if before incoperating in into your new profile image (I think it would also be too small to be recognized).

oh apologies, I shared a wrong link, sorry about that.
I mean you can create any customized image which is not including any official graphics from Guiding Stars, Local Guides and Google in general. For example something like this where everything is customized graphically:
About backgrounds mentioned by @MortenCopenhagen you might have received sharable media contents from the Local Guides team from where you can cut your profile photo too in high resolution.
