In short cycles, sometimes our points fluctuate a little, usually caused by batch calculations of the backend system, but it always settle down after some time.
Whatever we have contributed, for example photos, videos and reviews, could be flagged by the system or by other users if they are not up to the Maps contribution policy standard as documented here https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7422880
These are then made private and no longer count towards our contribution points.
Also, when places close down, and removed from Maps, our contributions to that location also no longer count towards our contribution points.
The above are a few examples on how our points may go down, hence if our level is at the border of a lower level, we may sometimes see our level go down.
However in the long run if we continually contribute consistently with quality, our points and level continue to go up.
