The Bangla month Joishtha /জ্যৈষ্ঠ is known as the Honey-month (do not read as honeymoon) in Bangladesh. Because various kinds of sweet and juicy fruits are found during this time. Actually, this honey-month stays more than 30 days. It starts in May and continues till July. Young Jackfruits
In this post, I will discuss a little about the national fruit of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Jackfruit. It is also the state fruit of the Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. It is also found in many other Asian countries. Some may gets confused with Durian. To avoid that confusion, you can read this post.
Jackfruits in the tree
To me, Jackfruit is a zero-wastage fruit. Not a single part of this fruit and its tree is a waste. You can utilize each and everything of it. The jackfruit tree is used to make expensive furniture in Bangladesh. Furniture made with this tree is considered aristocratic. Domestic animals like cows and goats are fed with leaves of this tree during the rainy season or during the flood. The spiky skin and backbone of ripe Jackfruit is a favorite dish to cows and buffaloes.
A ripe Jackfruit
You can read the health benefits of Jackfruit here. During my childhood, on the way to the primary school sometimes we ate small, green Jackfruit with salt. Small, green Jackfruits taste little sour.
Sweet flesh of Jackfruit
You can eat green Jackfruit as curry. To make Jackfruit curry you need to cut the Jackfruit into pieces and peel the skin and spikes, then boil it in a pot. After boil, you can cook the curry by mixing various kinds of spices, oil, and salt. To increase the taste of it you can use small shrimp or other fish you like to eat with it.
Green Jackfruit spicy curry
In our district, Tangail Jackfruit serves a special purpose. During this time, the son-in-law is invited to their in-laws’ house and entertained with Jackfruit flesh(petals), mango, rice, and milk together. This is a tradition there. Sometimes father/mother-in-law sends these fruit and milk to their son-in-law’s house. You can eat ripe Jackfruit without anything or with milk, rice, puffed rice etc. You can make juice and then drink. I am sure some other countries have different ways of eating Jackfruit.
Frying of Jackfruit seeds
You can eat the seeds of ripe Jackfruit in some ways. My mother loves to preserve the seeds of the ripe Jackfruit by drying them. During my childhood and in the rainy day, my mother fried the Jackfruit seeds and offered us as snacks to pass the idle time. We (my brother & sisters) ate the fried seed one after another spent the time by gossiping. If you do not know how to preserve the seeds, you can buy them also.
Meshed Jackfruit seeds
You can also cook curry with seeds. You need to cut the seeds into pieces and then mix it with another vegetable and make a tasty curry. You can also mesh them as well. To mesh them you need to boil it first with a little salt. Then crush and mix with garlic, onion, oil, pepper, and salt. It also tastes nice with hot-steamed rice.
Spicy curry with small shrimp, jackfruit seeds, and vegetables
Jackfruit plays a vital role in our economy and tradition. During this time many buy and sell Jackfruit as their livelihood. Some Jackfruits are also exported to the other countries in the world.
