🌋 A Walk Through Owakudani: From Volcanic Vents to Black Eggs 🗾

The giant Kuro-tamago (Black Egg) monument outside the Owakudani Kuro-tamago 館 (Owakudani Black Egg Hall) in Owakudani (å¤§æš§č°ˇ), Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The sign on the brick base directly below reads 大æļŒč°ˇãã‚ãŸãžã”館 (Owakudani Kuro-tamago Kan), which is the visitor center, gift shop, and museum complex located right at Owakudani.
Behind the monument is the entrance building to the Kuro-tamago Hall, along with visitors gathered outside, a bus stop sign to the left, and a foggy, misty atmosphere characteristic of Owakudani’s high altitude and volcanic fumes.

Owakudani (大æļŒč°ˇ), which translates to Great Boiling Valley, is an iconic active volcanic valley located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 1,040 meters, it offers a stark, moon-like landscape filled with roaring steam vents, boiling hot springs, and sulfurous fumes.

Typhoons are a regular part of life in Japan. Even though, we @MahabubMunna @AbdullahAM @SabbirHasan @ShakibTokyo and me @Trishatishu all went there for a trip together. It took us a long time to drive up to the valley in the rain because it was Saturday and there were long lines of cars. As soon as we parked the car and opened the door, the smell of sulfur dioxide hit my nose, causing a slight stinging sensation in my eyes. The clouds were almost within our reach. We couldn’t see Mount Fuji due to the rain, and the visit to the volcanic vent was also closed for safety reasons.

About Mount Kami

The Owakudani volcanic vent is situated on the slopes of Mount Kami (įĨžåąą, Kami-yama), the highest peak in the Hakone volcanic complex.
Standing at 1,438 meters (4,718 feet), Mount Kami is the tallest mountain in the Hakone region. Kami-yama, literally translates to God Mountain or Mountain of the Gods. Historically, it has been revered as a sacred mountain.

Geological Origins & History

Volcanic Formation roots of the Hakone volcanic complex go back over 130,000 years. However, the current landscape of Owakudani was formed relatively recently—about 3,000 years ago—when a phreatic (steam-driven) explosion caused a partial collapse of Mount Kami (the highest peak in Hakone). This created pyroclastic flows and landslide debris that dammed the local Haya River, creating both Lake Ashi and the dry, seething crater valley known today as Owakudani.

Historical Name (Ojigoku) extemd to the Edo Period (1603–1867), the locals referred to this desolate, sulfurous terrain as Ojigoku (大地į„), meaning Great Hell or Great Hell Hole

In 1876, prior to a scheduled visit by Emperor Meiji, the local authorities renamed the site to Owakudani (Great Boiling Valley)—reasoning that an Emperor should not be invited to visit Hell.

:volcano: Significance of Owakudani & Black Eggs (Kuro-tamago)

Volcanic Origin of Owakudani is a active volcanic valley created roughly 3,000 years ago during the last eruption of Mount Hakone. It is famous for its active sulfur vents and hot springs.

The Black Eggs of Owakudani’s signature delicacy is hard-boiled eggs cooked in the natural geothermal hot springs. The iron and sulfur in the hot spring water react with the eggshells, turning them completely coal-black, though the inside remains a normal hard-boiled egg.

Local Folklore is Stated as, Local legend says that eating one Kuro-tamago adds 7 years to your life.**
I have bought 1 packet consists of 4 eggs for 500 yen. They serves hot boiled eggs with a pinc of salt. There is a space for sitting for enjoying eggs. The egg tasted slightly different to. me and smelled little sulfur dioxide. p-132

Present Scenario & Visitor Experience

Today, Owakudani is one of the most famous tourist destinations within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, attracting millions of visitors who come to witness the raw power of the earth.
The Main Station Area is yhe general visitor complex features the Owakudani Kuro-tamago 館 (Black Egg Hall), souvenir shops, observation decks with views of Mount Fuji on clear days, and stalls selling the signature Kuro-tamago that is Black Egg.

Volcanic Monitoring & Safety

Because Owakudani is an active volcanic vent, gas emissions (hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide) are continuously monitored.

Unrestricted hiking trails around the valley rim remain strictly closed for public safety. The Nature Research Trail, which leads closer to the hot spring boiling pools, is strictly managed; visitors can only enter via small, pre-booked guided tours while wearing protective helmets.

The right beside the visitor complex in Owakudani, the site is home to the Enmei Jizo (åģļå‘Ŋ地č”ĩ尊) statue and its small shrine, Enmei-ji Temple. Legend says that during the Heian Period (over 1,000 years ago), the famous Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) visited this valley. Later he carved a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva out of stone. This deity was named Enmei Jizouson, meaning Life-Prolonging Jizo, lfor this ocals combined the sacred presence of the deity with the natural hot springs, creating the tradition of eating eggs boiled near the shrine to grant long life.

The valley is full of wonders. We were happy with what we could see amidst the rain, on our next visit, we hope to come on a sunny day, take the ropeway to view the entire valley, and visit the hot spring pool.

A small doubt: with that level of Sulphur Dioxide in the air, you all did not have any breathing problem due to insufficient oxygen?

Thank you @TravellerG ji for always giving the feedback. Yes we did fun.

As i have mentioned above we do feel the presence of Sulphur Dioxide.

Sulfur dioxide emissions are being continuously monitored to ensure levels remain within the range tolerable for a healthy person. So nothing Being worried about the level of emissions of sulfur dioxide.

They advised to take precaution before visit here.
All I can say it was an once in a lifetime experience. Thank you again.
