A Visit to Chandannagar, West Bengal, India

Chandannagar is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It was one of the five settlements of French India. There are multiple tourists locations at Chandannagar. Here are some of the popular ones:

  1. Tomb of Susanna Anna Maria

This is the mausoleum of a Dutch lady known as Susanna Anna Maria whose all seven husbands mysteriously died. Ruskin Bond’s famous novel “Susanna’s Seven Husbands” was inspired by the events and later it was adapted to a Bollywood film known as ‘7 Khoon Maaf (2011)’ starring Priyanka Chopra.

  1. Nandadulal Temple

One of the oldest temples in Chandannagar. It looks like a village but and the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

  1. Chandannagar Sacred Heart Catholic Church

The largest and the most popular Catholic church in Chandannagar situated near Chandannagar Strand Road just behind Chandannagar Museum.

  1. Clock Tower

A heritage building that house the local police station and it was established during the early 1880s. There is a giant clock featured at the top gifted by Joseph Daumain St. Pourcain in 1845.

  1. Chandannagar Strand Road

The decorated Bhagirathi River side road having waiting area surrounded by beautiful garden and lighting in the evening is so fascinating.

  1. Jora Ghat

Popular bathing ghat (area) with cool French architecture, separate enclosure for ladies and gentlemen led to the popular name “Jora”, meaning a “pair” in Bengali. Arguably, the most popular point for photography lovers.

  1. Dupleix Palace

The Dupleix Palace is a historical landmark that was built in the 1740s as the residential palace of Joseph Francois Dupleix, the former governor of Chandannagar. Inside the palace there is a museum with a stunning collection of Anglo-French wartime cannons, antiques from France, 18th century wooden furniture and other priceless objects. And behind the palace there is a huge decorated garden.

  1. Bhasha Shahid Smarak

A memorial park dedicated to the martyrs of 1971 Bangladesh War.

  1. Patal Bari

A heritage building situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi. Its lowest floor is submerged in the river. The Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore frequently visited the place and appreciated a lot about the building. He mentioned Patal-bari in many of his famous novels. The famous social reformer Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar also stayed in the building. The house was owned by the ruling family of nearby Bansberia. Unfortunately, no one is allowed to enter the building. You have to visit from outside.

Hi @Kausik_Bhunia ,

One more place that I didn’t mention is WONDERLAND PARK (K M D A Park) . The park is just one km from railway station and it is decorated with garden, lakes, architectures. I didn’t have enough time, so I skipped the place.

And don’t forget to try Jalbhara Sandesh from Surjya Kumar Modak . Chandannagar is famous for that.
