A trip to Coonoor, hill station in Tamil Nadu, India

Coonoor is a beautiful hill station town in Nilgiri Hills, Tamilnadu in the southern part of India. It is known for its tea estates, beautiful parks, view points, steam Nilgiri Mountain Railway etc. It is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. Coonoor is not very well known because it is overshadowed by Ooty which is just 20 Kilometers away and known as “Queen of Hill stations”.

How to reach

By Road – I went by road. Metupallayam(a town at the foothill) to Coonoor is a picturesque ride. There are 14 hairpin bends on the way to Coonoor and there are view points on the way where you can park your car and enjoy the beauty of nature.

By Train - The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train is the best way to reach, it is a must to experience at least once. Established in the early 19th century by the British, it is now declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The quaint toy train pulls blue and cream wooden carriages with large windows for tourists to enjoy the surrounding rocky terrain, tea plantations, and thickly forested hills all through the journey.

Coonoor is famous for

  • Tea plantations, Coonoor tea is famous world wide. You will be able to see tea estates on slopes all around Coonoor.
  • Sim’s Park, 12-hectare Sim’s Park which has as many as 1,000 types of plants from all over the world. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Inside the park there are some beautiful terrace with colorful flower beds, lawns and rockeries also there are some naturally occurring trees, shrubs, creepers and many unusual species of plants.
  • The Pasteur Institute of India, the institute is named after the French scientist, Louis Pasteur. It produces DPT vaccine and rabies vaccine.
  • View Points – Dolpin’s Nose is well over 5,075 Feet above sea level, 10 km from Coonoor and is a spectacular spot to visit. It is an enormous rock formation that is unique and the peak resembles a dolphin’s nose, hence the name Dolphin’s Nose. There are deep canyons found both to the left and right of Dolphin’s Nose and there is a view of Catherine Falls from this point. Lamb’s Rock, it is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from Coonoor. It has a view of the tea estates, coffee estates and Coimbatore plains. There are many more view point to enjoy.

Thank you for your comment @helga19 . All the places I mentioned are well connected by good roads so l was able to drive my car to very close proximity, for Dolphins nose view point I hardly walked 100 meters from the road. The way is not through forest but mainly tea and coffee estates, but you will surely be able to see monkeys and rarely elephants, bisons can be spotted in this area.
