A trip through the southern states of the US - part I. An adventure at the Grand Canyon.

I am writing this post on the anniversary of my visit to the natural miracle.
Wonder why? You may get some clues at the end.

To see the magnificent spectacle stayed my lifelong dream.

In the last year, we planned a road trip through Arizona, Nevada & California. That included the Grand Canyon as the initial stopover.

Starting from Austin, TX, the first part was by taking a flight to Phoenix.
The holiday season had started just. Expectedly, there was a massive queue for the security check.

And then some anxiety! I forgot removing a handkerchief from my side pocket. And, that became apparent in the scan.
Mercifully, there was no additional check.
Through all these, we managed to reach the gates just fifteen minutes before the departure.

In this way, even if you are in a hurry, take out everything from your shirt and trouser pockets. That saves further trouble.

Having a window seat, I continued exploring Maps to grasp what is passing underneath.
Tip: You should download your entire trip zone. Phone can receive GPS signal in flight mode also, and then the Map will show where you are at any given moment.

And then, the sight of the rising sun was captivating.

The view of Phoenix while on approach for landing, was also mesmerizing.

The next leg was through a self-drive rented-car.
The arrangement here is excellent. A bus from the rental company transports you to the parking area.
A broad choice of autos was available here.

Uniquely, all that experience was in stark contrast to the one I had back home some four months ago!

Nevertheless, the attendant supported us to make the right decision by suggesting cars with snow tyres. However, if you do not have chains, cops can turn you around in extreme snowfall situations. That was learning in the later part.

Caption: Which car to choose? That becomes perplexing.

Additionally, we avoid toll roads as far as possible.
But surprisingly, these alternative routes do not add much to the travel time!

The upcoming journey was through the arid regions of Arizona.
A variety of tall cacti were visible all around. That was an exceptional view.

The sight of snow-clad mountains at a distance was fascinating.

After checking in the hotel, we decided to explore the nearest trails at the Grand Canyon.

Though you can drive through the park, it is convenient to drop that in any parking lot & pick a bus making round trips within the domain.
Nevertheless, while parking, one has to be attentive in the lookout for the empty slots. Some may have wheelchair mark & others near an EV charging!

We picked a bus at the visitors centre and then alighted at a stop adjacent to the railway station.

Doing so, we reached the starting point of the Trail-of-time.

Well laid out walkway, several rest points at intervals & a captivating view through many perspectives! That was a treat to the eyes.
The path planners have considered wheelchair accessibility.
Nevertheless, we were feeling the exhaustion even in a slightest uphill walk because of rarefied air.

We covered billions of years in the two-and-half-km track and arrived at the end.

At one place, I was surprised to see an exhibit named “Vishnu Rocks.”

The Grand Canyon, gaining a connection with Hindu mythology! That was perplexing.

Over here is some information on identifying the formation so.

Caption: Feeling envious! I couldn’t go there!!

We reached the car park & decided to move to the sunset point.

Caption : Occasionally, you may be interrupted by wildlife crossing the road. On sighting, you have to stop instantly. No blowing of horn & have to wait till the entire herd passes.

Caption: The seeing of the setting sun on the backdrop of the ravine was unforgettable.

The second day.
The plan was to reach the Horseshoe bend and follow a guided tour to the spot.
There was a moderate snowfall & the show was fascinating.
We placed our vehicle at one such sight.
I went up a small dyke to manage a steadier shot.

… However, while stepping down, I stumbled upon a protruding stone!

After that, a visit to the local clinic became a must.
Next, to carry out the further visit with an Arm Sling? …I gave up the thought.

Further, most of the photos remained locked inside the memory card of damaged camera.
Thanks to the pandemic, I could arrange a repair only in the previous month!

Still, I insisted upon the family members to adhere to the program and visit the Horse Shoe Bend,

& that’s the cover photo!

To be continued…

The cover photo looks amazing @C_T did you use some special lens?

Also, the snow-clad mountain in a warm and arid place like Arizona was surprising.

The view of the roadside with plenty of cactus is perhaps the most captivating landscape in Arizona.

What an amazing trip :sunglasses:

Did you carry a medical insurane at the clinic or paid from your pocket?

The Vishnu rocks are amusing too and I am researching them online right away.

On my scheduled trip to the Grand Canyon in 2018, I was attending various seminars as part of a 4-day conference and preferred to keep the phone on silent mode for the entire duration without realizing on the 5th day morning that it was still on silent mode. When the bus-operator tried calling me several times at the pickup point, all the calls were missed and also an opportunity to visit the Horseshoe bend. That was too sad an episode.

Thanks for the queries @TusharSuradkar

The pic is from an iPhone.
(BTW. I am the lone person using an Android phone in my family)

We can’t start any overseas travel without a travel insurance.
However, the one we buy here is of no use for cashless domiciliary treatment.
The company would say - you can submit a claim within one month after return.
However, there is a minor clause in the fine print.
“Get a signature of the doctor who treated you, on the claim form!” Then that becomes practically worthless when you are on a trip.

Still, I have to visit the North Rim. Hope to get a chance to see that iconic wonder once again.

What a great post…! Amazing and breathtaking photos. Information and your experience is very helpful. Which camera did you use for clicking these photos? Very nice post @C_T . Waiting for the upcoming post.

Thanks for the appreciation @Rohan10

Multiple cameras were in use.
I have a Sony Rx100 digital camera. That’s a compact one & slips in trouser pockets. Further, that provides lot of options to have different modes like aperture priority/shutter priority/manual exposure etc.

One experience. When others were struggling to capture the Taj mahal in moonlight, this model did that effortlessly.
Then my Pixel 3XL provides a good backup.

& then rest of the family members were using different models of iPhone.

@TravellerG @C_T

Misfortune struck me on two other trips to the US.

The first one was during winter so I purchased a jacket that was unusually long and the side pocket was far below the waist level where I had kept my Sony digital camera. On entering a car and trying to close the door I did not realize in the dark of the night that the low hanging pocket and the camera inside was obstructing the door from closing I kept repeatedly pulling the door and damaging the camera screen in the process. I got it repaired after returning to Pune but for the remaining duration of the 6 weeks trip, I could hardly take any photos.

On returning from another US trip, I found that the memory card has gone bad for no reason and I lost almost all photos on that trip except a few that I had a backup on an external drive. I visited several repair shops in Pune but the memory card was damaged permanently. I was left with only those photos of me where I appeared in the photos taken by my colleagues  and who unfortunately were not so keen on taking photos as me.

That was unfortunate @TusharSuradkar

Do you have the memory card still or disposed of that?

@C_T I did not dispose the card yet and still with me.

Do you have any clues for repairing?

I would still love to have the photos back

“… pulling the door and damaging the camera screen…”

Really another sad story, @TusharSuradkar

Regarding CARD:

A: Damaged Card:

  1. Do it yourself: Since you are an enthusiast, try searching:

a. YouTube &

b. Google search solutions

There are many, many software (Some are really costly); some will show you the details, but will not allow downloading unless we pay. Some times, even after paying, the data may not be useful.

  1. Getting data through professionals: There are experts who do this work, with precision - to best of my knowledge, in Delhi, this is very cost-effective and I strongly believe that our @AmbrishVarshney will be able to guide you to locate someplace for recovering the card - I am very hopeful.

B: Regarding Future Card:

As a photographer, in the past 3 decades, I have gone through different difficult times; the lessons I have learnt, regarding Memory card will be published as a separate post, very shortly. The gist: buy only branded Card & the Version Only (Weather proof & Damage proof).

Thank you for the tips @TravellerG

I will definitely try out here in Delhi as the ones I knew in Pune had given up on the card.
