I love travelling and exploring local food wherever I go. Whenever I visit a new place, I try to discover and taste some of its famous or traditional dishes. For me, food is not just about eating—it is also a great way to learn about the culture, people, and everyday life of a place.
A few days ago, I had to stay in Rajshahi for several days because of some office work. During my stay, I came across several posts on social media about a popular local dish called Beef Kala Bhuna. That immediately caught my attention, and I decided to try it myself.
After searching on Google Maps, I found Hanif Mama’s Kalabhuna – Nowhata Branch, located near the Nowhata cattle market. From the Shaheb Bazar area, where I was staying, the restaurant was approximately 11 kilometres away. So, I decided to have my lunch there.
A Journey to Nowhata
I started my journey from the Shaheb Bazar area and reached Nowhata in around 30 minutes.
What makes this place interesting is that the restaurant operates around the cattle markets. Hanif Mama’s Kalabhuna has branches at three different cattle markets in Rajshahi, and they mainly open on the market days.
The schedule is :
Nowhata Cattle Market: Saturday, Monday, Tuesday & Thursday
Rajshahi City Cattle Market: Sunday & Wednesday
Chowbaria Cattle Market: Friday
The Nowhata branch is considered the main branch. It generally remains open from around 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
On cattle-market days, many buyers, sellers, and local people come here for lunch. Interestingly, many visitors and food lovers also come from different places to try the famous Kala Bhuna.
My Experience as a Local Guide
After reaching Nowhata, I spent some time exploring the surrounding area. Since I am a Local Guide, I also checked the information available on Google Maps.

I noticed that some of the information about the business was not accurate. So, I verified the details, including the business name and opening hours, and submitted the necessary corrections to Google Maps
I also added my own photos and videos and shared a review based on my personal experience.
For me, this is one of the most rewarding parts of being a Local Guide. We can use our real experiences to make information more useful and accurate for people who may visit the place in the future.
Finally, Time for Kala Bhuna!
The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived. Because of the crowd, we had to wait around 20 minutes before getting a seat.
Once we were seated, I ordered:
Beef Kala Bhuna
Beef Lal Bhuna
Fried Beef
Rice
They also offer Chicken Kala Bhuna and Mutton Kala Bhuna.
The Beef Kala Bhuna was the highlight for me. The taste was really good, and I also found the quality of the food quite satisfying. The portions were reasonable, and it was clear that the restaurant serves a large number of customers on market days.
Food Prices
One thing I appreciated was the reasonable pricing. You can have a good and filling meal without spending too much.
The prices I found during my visit were:
- Rice — BDT 20 per plate
- Beef Kala Bhuna — BDT 170 per plate
- Beef Kala Bhuna Single — BDT 130
- Fried Beef — BDT 170
Mutton Kala Bhuna — BDT 200
Local Chicken — BDT 170 per piece
Environment & Facilities
Since the restaurant is located inside the cattle-market area, the surroundings are quite simple. So, I would not recommend coming here expecting a modern or fancy restaurant environment.
However, if your priority is authentic local food and good taste, this place is worth considering.
Some facilities and limitations I noticed:
Hand-washing facility available
No washroom facility
No wheelchair accessibility
Cash payment only
No dedicated parking area, although there is plenty of open space around the market where you can park a car or motorcycle.
Supporting a Local Small Business
For me, places like this are more than just food shops. They are part of the local food culture and everyday life of the community.
As Local Guides, when we visit small local businesses, sharing our genuine experiences, adding accurate information to Google Maps, uploading useful photos, and leaving honest reviews can help other people discover these places.
That is also why I wanted to share this experience—not simply as a food review, but as a way of highlighting and supporting a local small business in Rajshahi.
Final Thoughts
If you ever visit Rajshahi and beef is one of your favourite foods, I would definitely suggest giving the Beef Kala Bhuna at Hanif Mama’s Kalabhuna, Nowhata Branch a try.
Personally, I really enjoyed the taste, and the flavour of the Kala Bhuna stayed with me long after the meal.
