A Plea to Mankind on Earth Day Celebration

We have been greatly affected by deforestation and other environmental hazards. So, I wrote a poem and a short essay to celebrate World Earth Day. I hope you will find it interesting.

A Short Essay!

The Black Agri-Vulture Man Sowed

Have you ever wondered the significance of the Green White Green in our flag? Nigeria is a land of green blessed with so many natural resources and made so much income from it. Even the music by TY Bello, the “Land is Green” makes this affirmative.

Man’s greatest problem started when it sparked global warming; a continuous pollution of her land through gas emission, mining and refining which affected our aquatic life and exposed us to deforestation with no afforestation. Lake Chad and River Basins are dry, making irrigation nearly impossible. The worse is the bloody strife between farmers and herders, which should ideally be a symbiotic relationship – herders feeding their livestock in grazing which helps farmers to weed farmlands in preparation for new season. Were we supposed to use blood to water our farms?

The climate has worsened even though agriculturists, scientists tried to give us hope through their several predictions. They even gave us precautions of how to reduce the effect but to no avail.

Rains and sunshine no longer come as usual. It was either the sun returned more fierce as or the rain became too violent that it washed all our farm heaps. There was no better way to help this because the two natures seem so raging on us. Who is to save us now?

We can no longer boast of our exports power neither could we live on past agricultural glory as our crops kept dying and our income no longer come because our produce could hardly sustain us. We import food items because our people no longer believe nor show interest in what we can produce.

We need a Green Agriculture right? Then let us go back to the beginning by restoring the dignity of our Green White Green!

A SHORT POEM

The Green Screen (April 2020)

Mummy, I am filled,

I want some more to eat

I grew up so healthy and beautiful

Always being admired by the young youths

Little did I know a time will come

When I will be weakened by my lapsy bone

A time when I will be left alone with nothing

Nothing to plant,

No water on the sand

Mummy is no more responding

Because of the destructive nature of man

All these while she cared about me,

But no more cared about her being

She is weak and can’t grow me better.

She is gone

And the whole village is on the run

I am devastated

My whole back aches to help her alone

What can man do to help my state

Even after I have cried till dawn

Happy Earth Day!

Wow! @UchechukwuEnem

Beautiful poem, I did find it interesting. Each lines of the poem means so much and tell much story about our nature earth and how climate change, pollution has been greatly depleting it.

Earth day is usually marked with planting a tree to help combat pollution and improve the atmosphere. I hope you did plant one in your area.

Best regards.

I am happy you’re a poem lover. ME too.

Your post is touching deeply, your words are so true. I can’t say “beautiful” because I don’t think the scope of this is to be beautiful. Deep and true, sadly true. Something to think about.

I was just thinking about this kind of conflict, when two days ago I was working to prepare a cover for my Earth Day’s post, @UchechukwuEnem

Then I decided for another one, but I wanted to keep this one inside the post for the meaning on the imagine

Is the Nature becoming violent? Is the nature reacting to our insane actions? Probably not. We are the cause of this violence, everyone of us.

In October 2019 I wrote a happy post, to show a beautiful and clean beach

A few days later, the beach was completely devastated by days of storm

What we are doing on the planet is to inject energy on the atmosphere, unbalancing a system that was stable for centuries, creating an ever greater swing, from extremely dry to storms of rains that wash, instead to irrigate. Hurricanes that change the aspect of the land.

We need to think, we need to react quickly. We need to act everyday.

Thank you for posting, @UchechukwuEnem

Happy Earth, I hope, from the deep of my Heart

We have changed the meaning of EARTH to

Eating

Away

Resources

Today

Hurriedly

Our Great Grand Fathers were so conscious of the earth that for each hut built, a soak away pit called “olulu” was provided to check flooding. But today who cares ? still wandering why erosion is killing our environment here?

In my opinion whatever the earth is experiencing is as a result of man’s activities and the one that upsets my ‘bottom line’ the most is ‘waste disposal’.

If we can properly manage waste disposal and manufacturer go the extra step to ensure that their packaging materials are ‘biodegradable’, we are one step towards having a safer, cleaner and healthier earth.

Thanks for calling my attention to this topic @ogewuru
