A picture tells a thousand words
What the Local Guides programme means to me
![]()
Introduction
In my youth I loved taking pictures with the manual SLR that I got for my 13th birthday. The invention of the smartphone brought that passion back, as I believe that my Pixel (I’ve had all versions so far) is in many ways as good as a DSLR . This links to the reason why I’m proud of being a Local Guide for one simple reason - I can combine two things that I love doing which is; helping people and taking pictures. I discovered all of this by accident. I was planning a visit for a day out with my family and t to visit location
Discovery
I discovered all of this by accident. I was planning a day out with my family using Google Maps and I began to wonder where the pictures that you can see when hovering the cursor came from. A quick Google search solved the problem. I quickly joined the programme and started to contribute.
Being a local guide has helped me to recapture my love of photography but this time with my Pixel (by the way - the best phone for taking pictures on the planet) rather than a formal camera. I realised that I could hone my skills and at the same time be useful to my community by not just taking carefully composed shots - but trying to capture what I think that people will most like to know about a location. What does the location really look like on the inside? How full does it get? What’s the shop layout? What stock do they have? What is unique about it? I then add a review to help enhance the picture that I’ve taken.
Lifetime learning
I’m a big believer in life-long learning. I would love to take my role as a guide to the next level. I would love the opportunity to meet other Guides from around the world to expand my horizons, share experiences and grow. I’d also love the chance to visit the Google campus. For me, it would be a ‘bucket list’ thing!
I know that the world is currently in lockdown but I’m hoping that once things are back to some form of normality that you will choose me to attend as a delegate.
Stay safe and hopefully see you soon!!!
