A Mixed Bag of Dim Sum in Crowded Dim Sum Town

Restaurant Name: Dim Sum Town

Address: Level 5, Ahmad & Kazi Tower, House 35 Dhanmondi 2, Dhaka 1209

Price (including VAT): 1470 Taka (2 person)

Rating: 6/10

I was keen to check out the buzz around the new Dim Sum Town restaurant near Shimanto Square. Given its location and dim sum focused menu, it has drawn inevitable comparisons with the renowned Yum Cha District.

I visited on Christmas afternoon and as expected it was packed with hungry diners itching for a holiday feast. The decor is sleek and modern with nice oriental touches but the cramped seating arrangement added to the crowd chaos. We ordered the signature chicken rice bowl and strawberry mojito.

While waiting over 45 mins just for drinks, the efficient yet evidently new servers tried their best in the face of an overwhelming crowd. The chicken rice at 515 taka was nicely seasoned with tasty meat but the mojito at 220 taka was a letdown with too much icy drowning the flavors.

The Dim Sum Town menu indeed offers an extensive range of delicate dumplings, aromatic noodles and specialty seafood true to the cuisine. I will be returning to explore more of the traditionally inspired dim sum and hopefully at a less crowded hour.

For Asian food aficionados in Dhanmondi, Dim Sum Town makes for a nice contemporary addition. But go with modest expectations as the fledgling restaurant still struggles with inconsistent service and flavors amidst its burgeoning popularity. The potential is certainly there if they can balance the demand versus quality equation better.
