The founder of the mosque, Haji Baqir Ali Ahmed, established a small family mosque in 1868 exactly 150 years ago at Islambagh in Syedpur district Nilphamari.
In 1920, a 1560 square feet Masjid was built on the initiative of Imam Haji Karim, which was previously a two-storied tin mosque. In 1965, as there was no ceramic factory in the region at that time, 243 pieces of Shankar Marmar stone were brought from that distant Kolkata. Later, 25 metric tons of ceramics or China clay stone were obtained from Bogra Gas Factory.
These ceramics were called ‘chinamati’ in those days. And because the mosque is decorated with pieces of porcelain, people started calling it ‘China Mosque’, which later became 'Chini Masjid’. The interesting thing is that the name plate of the mosque is now written as ‘Chini Masjid’.
The mosque is still the same as before with 32 minarets and 3 big domes. Another interesting thing is that right on the west side of this mosque. Everyday thousand of people came here to see this historical place
