Bellingham has a rich and thriving art scene! “The City of Subdued Excitement” features both installations and outdoor murals. Recently a famous stencil sprayer came thru and left us with these beautiful pieces! He puts up koi in cities all across the US, maybe yoully see some near uou soon ?
@djstan , I have seen these same exact spray painted koi stencils in downtown San Mateo, CA - a suburb south of San Francisco 6 or 7 years ago. They were around downtown area as I walked around. Do you know his name and his background? If you can provide a link that would be great.
Cheers,
Karen
@KarenVChin that is so super cool! Do you have any pics? I would love to see
The artist is Jeremy Novy check him out!
so beautiful
4 phones later. I did find this on my Insta page. It was about 5 years ago, not 6 or 7.
What I remember was there was a koi trail on particular downtown San Mateo street corners.
This was also when “yarn bombs” were popular. I know the City of San Mateo paid for a sister team to “yarn bomb” two main blocks of city trees and knit and crochet street poles during the winter of 2013.
So I am now assuming they paid Jeremy Novy to do the same after reading your post.
Thanks for solving that mystery of seeing all these “koi” during that time for me. I always wondered why there were random spray painted koi on the sidewalk.
Cheers,
Karen
“Yarn bombing” is popular in my town also! Although that is sponsored more through local knitting groups and the shop in town. I don’t think Jeremy was paid by the city of Bellingham, as there was little to no press of it ![]()
