A fun Rotterdam detail: Did you ever notice what's missing on Centraal Station?

Hey everyone! :waving_hand:

Back with another story from my time living in the Netherlands. Today, I want to share a fun detail about one of my favorite spots in the city: Rotterdam Centraal Station.

If you travel around the Netherlands by train, you’ll notice that almost every big station has the city’s name on the front (like Amsterdam Centraal or Utrecht Centraal).

But Rotterdam is different!

When you stand in front of this awesome building (locals call it “The Shark”), the big letters above the entrance just say: CENTRAAL STATION. The word “Rotterdam” is completely missing.

Why is the city name missing?

Architects might tell you it’s because the station is a major international hub. But Rotterdam locals have a much better explanation!

People here are super proud of their bold, modern city. When you ask a true Rotterdammer why the name isn’t on the roof, they will usually smile and tell you: “When you get here, the unique skyline makes it so obvious that you are in Rotterdam! We don’t need to write it down - you just know where you are!”

I just love that local attitude! Beyond the fun story, the station itself is a masterpiece of modern design with a massive solar roof, and it was always one of my favorite places.

What do you think of this local explanation? Do you know a building in your city that has a cool or funny “local legend” behind its design?

Let me know in the comments below! :backhand_index_pointing_down:
