A COVID-19 'lockdown' dual on Melbourne's most famous beach!

Ordinarily on a sunny day like this, St Kilda Beach, being Melbourne’s most famous and popular beach, would be packed with beach lovers. Yes there were some out enjoying the sunny day, some in and some on the water and some others doing rather weird, unusual, yet wonderful things! When we went out yesterday for a walk along this popular Melbourne strip we saw a flock of seagulls anxiously watching a local, or perhaps a visiting tourist, having his lunch on St Kilda Beach. This kind of activity on a beach like this is nothing unusual other than we thought that the local seagull population must certainly be mystified by the absence of many more humans on such a beautiful sunny day. The photo below shows this male on St Kilda beach with St Kilda Marina and its Lighthouse in the backdrop. However, as the feature photo above indicates, we saw a lot more during this ‘lockdown’ walk and worthy of reporting to our fellow Local Guides!!!

Some photos follow showing some of the usual activities we saw during our walk…

BUT THEN we saw this most unusual beach activity. Sabre fencing, really!!! But then again lots of people are walking around town with masks on! So perhaps these full-head type masks are ok!

St Kilda Beach can be packed with beach lovers on a hot summer’s day but even on much milder days you’ll usually find some activity there. With its pristine white sand and safe water, the boardwalk and cycling path, the backdrop of restaurants and eateries, a marina, skatepark, playground, picnic and BBQ area, the St Kilda Pier and breakwater with Little Blue Penguins, it’s no wonder that St Kilda Beach is Melbourne’s most famous and popular beach. And being just a short tram ride from the central CBD, it’s really a place that you must visit when you visit Melbourne.

I do like to make my photo stories a little more interesting when I can so I grabbed the opportunity when I saw this sabre dual, carefully crafted the post headline and selected the feature photo just to grab your attention and while I do hope that you found it interesting, of course, the purpose of this post was to share some photos with you of the current ‘lockdown’ situation on this famous and popular Melbourne beach. Did you enjoy it?

Have you seen any unusual activity on a beach near you? If so share your photo story with us as we’d all love to hear it

You are now free to enjoy nature in Australia as lockdown is over there @AdamGT All the photos look great. Do you love fencing?

Hi @MukulR and thank you for your comment. Yes Melbourne is sort of out of lockdown but there are strict rules still in place like having to keep a certain distance away from each other. But hey, it certainly has improved a lot! My only disappointment is that we cannot leave the country and ordinarily I would now be in L.A. with family :joy:

ps: Do I love fencing? Well I love watching any sport but I myself am not a fencer. What about you?

Great. I hope your family members are safe in the US @AdamGT . Yes, social distance (3 feet) and wearing masks are very much helpful to fight this virus. Anyway, no need to take any risk, obey the government instruction on this and I hope you can meet your family members soon. Regards.

Thank you so much for your lovely and thoughtful comment @MukulR . Do you think fencing masks are a bit extreme?

Though I have never played fencing masks before, it seems to me exciting @AdamGT . I think I will do better in fencing if I get a chance to participate :grinning: . It is really a nice game.

St. Kilda Beach! how I miss it! It must be fun to see the Sabre Fencing. And you are right @AdamGT …as long as you wear your mask, you’re good :). Mask on! Cheers from Jakarta.

Oh so you have been to St Kilda beach @indahnuria ? That’s great. I’m sure you loved it! Yes it was the first time I saw saber fencing there, in fact, anywhere really but when I saw this dual I immediately thought back to how I visited Condom in France, the home town of d’Artagnan where I saw the statue of him and the three musketeers. So you live in Jakarta! I’ve been there a few times. Is it true that there are ideas to move this capital to East Kalimantan?

@AdamGT beautiful and great descriptions. I had a great memory with seagulls back then at Sydney

Fourth caption is giving me life :joy:

If my memory serves me well, I only heard about Sabre fencing in Star wars, I never knew they were real.

the third photo is my mood all year long, "even when the world goes to sleep, light it up with cheerful abandon".

  • @_S_u_b_h_a *please come and see what I like so much about your photo in @AdamGT 's fourth photo here.

I’m glad you finally made it here @Ewaade_3A . As I wrote I was somewhat surprised to see this dual on the beach but then again, it is St Kilda!
