Ordinarily on a sunny day like this, St Kilda Beach, being Melbourne’s most famous and popular beach, would be packed with beach lovers. Yes there were some out enjoying the sunny day, some in and some on the water and some others doing rather weird, unusual, yet wonderful things! When we went out yesterday for a walk along this popular Melbourne strip we saw a flock of seagulls anxiously watching a local, or perhaps a visiting tourist, having his lunch on St Kilda Beach. This kind of activity on a beach like this is nothing unusual other than we thought that the local seagull population must certainly be mystified by the absence of many more humans on such a beautiful sunny day. The photo below shows this male on St Kilda beach with St Kilda Marina and its Lighthouse in the backdrop. However, as the feature photo above indicates, we saw a lot more during this ‘lockdown’ walk and worthy of reporting to our fellow Local Guides!!!
Some photos follow showing some of the usual activities we saw during our walk…

BUT THEN we saw this most unusual beach activity. Sabre fencing, really!!! But then again lots of people are walking around town with masks on! So perhaps these full-head type masks are ok!

St Kilda Beach can be packed with beach lovers on a hot summer’s day but even on much milder days you’ll usually find some activity there. With its pristine white sand and safe water, the boardwalk and cycling path, the backdrop of restaurants and eateries, a marina, skatepark, playground, picnic and BBQ area, the St Kilda Pier and breakwater with Little Blue Penguins, it’s no wonder that St Kilda Beach is Melbourne’s most famous and popular beach. And being just a short tram ride from the central CBD, it’s really a place that you must visit when you visit Melbourne.
I do like to make my photo stories a little more interesting when I can so I grabbed the opportunity when I saw this sabre dual, carefully crafted the post headline and selected the feature photo just to grab your attention and while I do hope that you found it interesting, of course, the purpose of this post was to share some photos with you of the current ‘lockdown’ situation on this famous and popular Melbourne beach. Did you enjoy it?
Have you seen any unusual activity on a beach near you? If so share your photo story with us as we’d all love to hear it
