A category we've been waiting for: Memorial

With only a handful days left in 2022, I guess no addtional categories will still be added, so let’s have a look what was added since the last time I reported new categories (in case you want to see all ‘new category’ posts: here’s the overview post).

Not an awful lot have been added, but for sure one of them is a category that a lot of people have been waiting for: Memorial. Especially for war memorials this category was really needed - as most of those are now catgorized as Memorial park (which obviously can and in most cases does contain a memorial), Historic landmark, Cultural landmark, Heritage preservation, Momument (which is no longer available to add to places, but you still find quite a few POIs where this is still being used), or the once omnipresent tourist attraction (for a long time this was the 1st item listed in the list of example categories, so people tended to use this for anything where they did not find a fitting category).

For some war memorials you could doubt whether to use Memorial or Statue, but that depends on each specific situation of course. Where I live, you find a lot of war memorials which are really not a statue but an ornamented stone with names engraved in them - a perfect fit for the new Memorial category.

The other new categories are Pediatric clinic, Heritage railroad (I’m pretty sure @PaulPavlinovich might be interested in that one) and Piadina restaurant (which will be most useful in Italy, right @ErmesT @LuigiZ ?)

Hello @JanVanHaver ,

this is very amazing!

I was waiting for this new category too.

A lot of memorials are here in Hamburg, Germany and finally we are able to give these POI’s the right category. :star_struck: :+1:t2:

Thank you very much for writing your informative Local Guides Connect-post and for letting us know about this important, new category! :star_struck: :+1:t2:

I wish you a great day!

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :grinning: :star2: :de:

Indeed @ChiaraMariaC in Germany there are a lot of them. You could also use this category for all the Stolpersteine.

Thank you very much for your reply and also for letting me know that I can use this new category also for the Stolpersteine, @JanVanHaver ! :star_struck: :bouquet:

I’ll edit every Stolperstein and set this category: ,Memorial" for them. :star_struck: :star2:

I wish you a great day and a happy new year! :sparkler:

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :star2: :de:

You are right @JanVanHaver , it is one of the issues that I have the most confusion. There are many places to add in Turkiye and sometimes it creates confusion.

Very interesting category indeed @JanVanHaver , thank you for sharing! The piadina restaurant makes me smiling, although it can be indeed interesting but we don’t really have a specific piadina restaurant here in Italy … or at least I’ve never seen one for what we consider a piadina  . Maybe a translation attempt from pancakes  ? Or @ErmesT is aware of something else for a piadina.

Great… These new categories are very helpful to categorized the POIs more accordingly.

Thank you so much @JanVanHaver for the information…

This is a great improvement @JanVanHaver if you remember my post about honouring Remembrance day soldiers and veterans here

it’s long over due.

Genau @makky in manche Regionen ist die Hausnummer-Sortierung wirklich dramatisch - habe ich auch schon gesehen (und teilweise korrigiert  )

I am interested in Heritage railroad indeed @JanVanHaver although that is country specific, outside the USA it should be Heritage railway. I doubt the people who run Heritage railway would be interested though, tourist attraction is more likely to bring people in lol. It does also raise the question what part of the railway should get the tag? Local Guides can’t actually add or edit the railway itself which leaves only the stations and the majority of these are locked in the transit layer so we can’t edit them anyway heritage or not.

@PaulPavlinovich we can’t all of a sudden expect all categories to start making sense, do we?

I also fail to see how & where exactly that category label should be used. It sounds more like something useful for the transit layer, not the POI layer we local guides have access to.

@JanVanHaver I really wonder why house numbers are such a problem on Maps, at OSM or Here everything is fine.

I reckon Gallipoli would be a big one…

Dear, Mr.Jan

I don’t understand the points and levels that are awarded, but I would love to contribute to people.
