A Castle that's not a Castle

This week we visited a great place here in the English Lake District called Wray Castle.

It’s called a castle but it isn’t a castle in the true sense - rather its a Gothic Revival castle sitting on the shores of Lake Windermere with turrets, towers and informal grounds. In other words, it was built, not in medieval times, but at the end of the 1800s during the reign of Queen Victoria. The house has an association with a famous author, Beatrix Potter, who spent a summer holiday there when she was 16 in 1882. She bought a small farm in the local area, Hill Top, in 1905 with royalties from her first book The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Today, Wray Castle open to the public and is a fantastic place for all the family - the many rooms of the castle are used for various activities for children. One is full of giant building blocks, one has dressing up clothes, another with a table tennis table, one for learning about the local ecology, a couple dedicated to the stories and characters created by Beatrix Potter and many others. All this surrounded by the fantastic scenery of the local mountains and lakes. If you are ever in the area it’s well worth an exploration!

This is very interesting @RussKH , thanks for sharing!

This place has a great history to it, and I like how it’s open to the public now. With 830 acres attached to the castle, there must be a huge open space which from your photo looks beautiful. I wonder if the whole piece of land is open to the public as well.

Do they charge anything for tourists to enter?

I like Castles… So want to touch that stones

Great Pictures. Respect
