A Beverage with two sides (Palm wine)

Hello Local Guides!, Happy new year!

There are so many beverage drinks in my region like coca cola products, PepsiCo, Chivita etc. But there is one astonishing beverage that is so interesting to know about.

Unlike many other beverages produced by the mixing of various ingredients and chemicals, Palm wine is completely naturally got from a tree.

Palm wine , known by several local name, is a beverage created from the sap of various species of palm tree such as the oil palm, date palm and coconut palms.

Palm wine is a beverage with two sides because when freshly harvested it is a very nutritious and delicious beverage but after some hours it is a little bit sour and alcoholic up to 4%. This is so because of the fermentation process that occurs with the presence of yeast inside this delicious beverage.

Unfermentated palm wine has much Health benefits:

  • It promotes lactation
  • It reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases
  • It increases eyesight and
  • Also it has the ability to fight against cancer because it contains riboflavin.

Also Palm wine is very important in Igbo culture and traditions, traditional Igbo public and private events, including: wedding and meetings, and other get- together. , observes that libation with palm-wine is a symbol of intimacy with the ancestors and harmony with the living.

In Igbo traditional marriage, Palm wine is usually carried by the bride in her hands in search of her husband to be, when found among the people, He is given a cup of palm wine to drink from by so doing fulfilling the main traditional rites of marriage by showing the general public who her husband is.

In Igbo traditional meetings, Palm wine is usually served together with other crafted beers and beverages. This is to fulfil the rites of traditions.

Palm wine is of great importance to us, and its uses cannot be overemphasized.

I hope wherever you find it, you should at least have a taste if only for its health benefits.

Thanks :hugs:

P.S. This is my part of monthly topic initiated by Local guide @HiroyukiTakisawa which topic is “A way to get good beverages in your region”. I also grant him the right to use these images.

I’ll wait for your interesting comment.

Best regards!

@Austinelewex Wow, this Palm wine is interesting. We have it here too but I prefer the fresh one, not the alcoholic one. But most of all, I like the organic cup? What is it made from?

Amazing post with nice photos and description @Austinelewex Palm wine is also available in our country but as it is little alcoholic, it is not allowed to dring publicly. I have not any experience of drinking it. Anyway, thanks for sharing this nice post with us. Stay safe. Regards.

Hello @Austinelewex

As always a well written and researched post  . This deserves a reading and a like hit from me.

I especially like posts that highlights the culture tradition and behavioural pattern of a particular people. To relate well with people you need an understanding of their cultures and traditions. You did a good job in the presentation of your culture as an**Igbo man :cowboy_hat_face: .**Well done.

I love the health benefits as well but I have heard it can get you tipsy or happy as the case may be is that true?

I like your replies as @MukulR as well as @Ant_Bad_Yogi do you have this in Bangladesh or have you ever tasted it? I have in time past but don’t like to make a habit of it. Nevertheless it’s a good drink.

Cheers

Hello @Ant_Bad_Yogi

Sorry for keeping your answer so long… I was busy. :sleepy:

Okay, the organic cup is made from a plant called Calabash . This calabash is used widely in the olden days to make kitchen utensils - cups, pots, plates etc. It is generally organic and biodegradable though it is no longer fashionable as before but people who want to feel the traditional taste use it.

Here are some Google images .

Thank you for your lovely comment.

I’ll love to tag @Izumi to read as well.

Oh really @MukulR .

I didn’t know about it. But when freshly harvested palm wine is not alcoholic at all. It is just a beverage. So I guess.

Anyways, thanks for your useful information.

Best regards.

Thank you for your useful information @Muhammad_Usman

Yes, I think you can actually take it when it is just a beverage that is why I came up with the name (A beverage with two sides) one as a juice if preferably and after sometimes as an alcohol.

Have a great weekend.

@Austinelewex Only several hours from juice to wine, it’s incredible. People who make wine here would envy this method so much. How long can it be stored?

Of course I haven’t tried something similar here.

Hi @Austinelewex kudos for sharing this nice post about Palm wine. You gave detail information about it. How it turns from juice to wine.

It many health benefits.

And it’s importance in Igbo tradition.

I drank it many times in the past especially the undiluted freshly tap .

You know the one that could bust a bottle.

It can be stored for a long time @OlgaKlimchik As it is being stored, the alcoholic content increases.

So the option is left for you to choose. Some like it when it is an alcohol. While others don’t. People like @SholaIB :joy:
