According to Hinduism, Temples are not only places of worship. In fact, they are embodiment of our present-day culture. India (and many other parts of the world) depicts various temple forms - which are basically designed according to customs practiced there.
For example, Nagara temple style is mostly followed in North India, Dravidian temple style in South India, and Kalinga temple style in East India (mostly in Odisha).
Idols in Indian temples not only depict Gods, but also show cultural lives of people. Various Indian temple show statues of Nartakis (Dancers), Apsaras (female spirits), Mithunas (Male-Female pair), etc.
One such wonderful temple where I visited recently is Maruthamalai Arulmigu Subramanya Swami Temple in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu, India). By chance, I visited there on a full moon day (Poornima) and seeing the moon above temple gate (Gopuram) was a treat to my eyes. The view was really magnificent, I must say …
This temple is not much famous in South India region, but I really had a good time here.
