October is World Vegetarian Awareness Month. It’s a great time to explore the variety of delicious, nutritious, and healthy vegetarian dishes out there. Choosing plant-based meals can add another flavor to your diet and help the environment, too.
To celebrate Vegetarian Month, we rounded up four dishes from around the globe recommended by Local Guides on Google Maps. Lettuce go!
Mini veg thali in Pune, India
Local Guide @AjitThite says: “Thali is a Hindi word for a ‘plate’ or ‘dish.’ A mini thali is a combination of tasty, comprehensive meals that are modest and sufficient for an individual. Many Indians prefer this to avoid hefty meals, waste, and overeating. Every restaurant has their own version of it. At the Krushnasagar Pure Veg Restaurant, it is served with two veggie dishes, Dal (yellow chickpeas soup), curd, and one sweet dish (in this case, a fruit salad). [On the side you can have] two rotis (Indian bread), a set of four/five puris, papad, or plain rice. In some places, it is served for a limited time during the day, especially at lunch.
This restaurant is well-known among families and business travelers for its delicious cuisine and excellent services, which include plenty of space for parking in the area. The ambiance was pleasant, and there was a considerable amount of room that gave families privacy. Here is my Google Maps review.”
Eggplant rollatini in Bogotá, Colombia
Local Guide @annamariapino says: “De Raíz Cocina Café is one of my favorite places in Bogotá! The atmosphere is chilled. Nice interior. I think I’ve tried 50% of the dishes and I don’t remember not liking any of them. Pizzas are awesome. Vegan cheesecakes are awesome. What stands out here are the flavors. Every meal is full of flavor. Not simple at all. The vegan cashew spreads are my favorite.”

Zucchini and spinach pie in Farmakas, Cyprus
Local Guide @PennyChristie says: “I took this photo in a beautiful mountain village in Cyprus, called Farmakas, where a MasterChef Greece contestant Stavros Georgiou is the creator and chef of the popular brunch menu at the 1842 cafe. The cafe is only open on certain days of the week during the summer months and only offers a brunch menu with exclusive items made and created by Stavros. He personally prepared that zucchini and spinach pie and brought it to our table. Stavros then proceeded to break the egg yolk and squash it in with the filling. Stavros told us, ‘The point is to have the egg with the zucchini and spinach filling.’ It was delicious.
Here is my review of 1842.”
Steamed vegetables in Fukuoka, Japan
Local Guide @yamamo_cchi says: “I ordered this because it is difficult to cook seiro-mushi style vegetables at home (Editor’s note: in a bamboo steamer), so I thought it would be better to have a professional do it for me at the Minori Cafe. Steaming vegetables makes them sweeter, and you can eat them as they are, without any salt or dressing. You get to enjoy the true flavor of the vegetables! They are also very colorful and [can] brighten up [your day].”
