The date for the 2020 36walk is Saturday March 21stpostponed world-wide. I will relaunch later in the year!! I apologise for any inconvenience.
The 36walk runs each year lead by volunteer hosts in many cities around the world. The concept is to improve our photography in general and particularly for Maps.
In today’s digital age, each shot as no measurable cost. In the time of film the most common size was 36 shots and each of those shots had a tangible monetary cost. We take a step back in time and during each walk only 36 shots are allowed encouraging each participant to consider, compose the perfect shot and only then click the shutter.
A conversation at Connect Live 2019 with Googler and accessibility champion Sasha from the Maps team has inspired me this year to ask you and your walkers to keep an eye out for accessibility and to add images of ramps, curb cuts, hearing loops, accessible public bathrooms, handrails, etc. to Maps and mention features in your reviews.
Any experience level, any device and any type of photography is welcome. Each year the walk has spanned the globe on every continent except Antarctica and is always growing. If you’ve been thinking about leading a meet-up perhaps this is the opportunity you’ve been looking for. No experience necessary, as a walk leader you’ll get all the information, materials and graphics you need as well as support through being included in the global 36walk MyMap and Connect Post. This year I’ll also be offering mentoring in the lead up to the walk. The 36walk puts you on the path to being a community leader and influencer and boosts your profile here on Connect. This is one way to lift yourself among the 120M Local Guides in our family.
I will be calling for walk leaders early next year, but feel free to ask any questions about the walk on this post.
Hi @Yannick_S thanks for expressing some interest in 36walk I appreciate it. There is one main walk date which in 2020 will be March 21st. It is perfectly acceptable to organise a 36walk on any day of the year if March 21st does not work for you.
There are no conditions to hosting a 36walk, any Local Guide is welcome to do it. Early next year I will put out the call for walk leaders and that post gets edited as each new city and walk leader gets added and a MyMap showing all the walks around the world is also created. You don’t need any Meet-up experience as you get all the information you need. The only things you need to do is to work our the places you want to take a walk to and the route you want to take and to promote it locally via your socials.
I love to have people hosting walks as the 36walk is growing because of interested people like you.
That is great @Yannick_S early in 2020 I will provide the necessary information for organising a walk and will be very happy to talk directly with you to help you get going.
Great to have you join in @KseniaM I’ll be in touch in the new year with detailed information to help all the walk leaders. I’ll put out a formal call for leaders around the middle of January and we’ll take it from there.
Generally I recommend announcing your walk around a month before its going to happen.
Hey everyone, I find myself in a position where its time to organise the 36 walk and I’m right in the middle of moving house and organising a large youth event which along with working in a number of simultaneous projects at work and my railway volunteer duties I’ve got nothing left.
I’m going to postpone this year’s 36 until later in the year to facilitate the event being better run, better planned and better supported.
