#1Place-1Photo - 04 - The Alappuzha Beach - Why the Sky is Golden during Sunset - TravellerG

The Place:

Alappuzha Beach is an important tourist attraction in Kerala, India.

Alappuzha is a town with canals, backwaters, beaches, paddy fields and lagoons; Lord Curzon described Allepey (the old name) as the “Venice of the East”. Alappuzha is well known for its houseboats cruises in the backwaters - A very unique experience.

And the Beach is very beautiful and clean - (faces the Arabian Sea). The beach is an excellent place to relax, although it has nothing much to claim, other than the lighthouse & a children’s park + some petty shops. The ruins of an old pier extend to the sea, which is over 150 years old.

This beach hosts many events like Alappuzha Beach Festival (New Year), Sand art festival and

many more, annually and periodically.

This is an excellent location for Photography, where every season presents different colours and feels.

The following shot is an Original (Resized) shot, captured in Sony RX 10 M2 at this beach - Just luck.

EXIF: f/2.8, S:1/10 sec, ISO: 800 - Time of the Photograph: 6:31 PM in November 2019. Fixed Lens Camera. (Manual, monopod aided).

Why the sky is Reddish/Orange/Golden during Sunset & Sunrise?

In simple words:
Our visible light consists of (main) Red, Orange, Yellow, Green & Blue (violet hard to see) colours. If all these lights travel in a straight line, we get white light.

During mid-day, the sun is above us (closer to us) and the light travels straight to us - hence we get white light.

Whereas, when the sun goes towards sunset (sunrise too) & dips towards the horizon, the light passes through more of the (longer) atmosphere. And remember, our atmosphere is filled with different particles/molecules (of water, dust, pollution, different aerosols, etc.). During the longer travel of the light, the colours toward Blue (Violet) [shorter wave lenth] gets scatted due to the particles and colours towards Red [longer wave length] passes through more easily, although the intensity will be lower.

This is why we feel “soft reddish/Orange/Golden tint” during the Sunset & Sunrise.

We will discuss about Twilight, Golden Hours, Blue Hours, in the later Posts.

Hope this will be helpful for many.

Just for your Info:
The sky of Mars looks orange or reddish during the day and towards Sunsets it takes a blue-grey tone.
