12,000 points disappeared from local guide profile. Its seems they were erased from questions answered.
Did I just waste hundreds of hours answering questions about places?

Anybody else got this problem of points disappearing?

I hope that is a temporary glitch because I would exit the program if not.

It’s sad to note you lost so many points.
As you rightly found out, that was due to the deletion of answers when you chose to purge the Maps history.
You will find details about that in this post.
The losing of points because of this instinctive action is not recoverable.
Now to prevent further loss, please select “Retain the history forever” in the settings menu.
Also to recover the damage to some extent, you can visit the “Answer questions” in the contribute now section and try the best. However, the feature is available only in an Android app.

I will exit the local guide program in due course.

Same happened to me. My more than 1000 aswers to questions reduced last week down to 71. This event demoted my gold badge to bronze. I feel also quite disappointed.
It is very disappointing. It happened to me also. Frankly I dont believe the time expense will be worth to recover those points from deleted aswers.
