100 Edits went live!

This is probably my first post here in LG community. I have always been a lurker here. So this can also be an introduction thread for me.

Being a banker by profession, I have the sad opportunity to be away from home in distant places for most of the time. Google maps have always guided me in my journey, and I have made a point to give back to the users whenever I can.

Today, I am excited as 100 edits of mine went live in one day.

Well that’s all the brag.

Now I am off to delete 100 emails …!!

Thanks for having me in this wonderful community!

Congratulations on that achievement @Hari_Madhav . What types of edits are you typically making? Correcting the name or category? Adding opening hours? Anyway: it’s always great to see people taking the time to improve the data quality on Maps.

By the way, have you heard about the project called Local Guides Clean The Map (#LGCTM)? There are plenty of tips there on how to make “cleaning” edits (make sure to check the links at the bottom of the main post). And you could also check out some episodes of the LetsGuide Podcast for even more tips.

Thankyou Jan, I am doing some sort of cleaning the map in one way or another. I went through quickly through your link and however this was not mentioned or I think I overlooked it.

Here in my part of the world people usually add their private residence/house to Google maps. I usually go through those and edit and then as 'Not open to public ’ since it doesn’t have a storefront.

I also try translating /editing the titles, but somehow Google doesn’t verify the translations and it remains pending. So that’s frustrating.

Sounds like a lot of work indeed @Hari_Madhav . Over here this is not a common practice, although I have seen some. If you care to write a post on exactly what you do and how you do it, I will gladly add it to the overview of posts in the LGCTM main post.

One more thing which is quite important here on the forum: if you want to make sure that another Connect user sees a reply you give, make sure to ‘tag’ them by typing the ‘@’ symbol and then select that user from the list (or start typing the name if there is no list).

@JanVanHaver , Having been part of a moderation team elsewhere, I didn’t want to tag a forum moderator unnecessarily for a simple reply considering the works you undertake in the site.

To answer your question, let me explain what I do normally. (Now it’s giving away secret to getting good points, (just reached level 7), but it’s all for the cleaning the map of spam unnecessary items.

If I do a quick search of ‘’ 's house" or its local translation ‘veedu’ this is the results

Then I have the task of combing through each of those looking at photographs, ratings etc to see if they have any business (like a paying guest facility, or a homestay etc). But most of the time these pertain to private places or homes added by the resident or their friends. Which as per the rules doesn’t need to be there.

What I do to remove the place -

Suggest an edit - close/remove a place - Not open to public

Which gives me a prompt that says (You’re suggesting that Maps remove — s house because it is private and doesn’t allow public visitors. This includes personal places with no reception desks or public entrances.) And confirm it and that’s it.
