10 Street Food that you should try in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is one of the world famous destination and dream place to globe wanderer. Chiang Mai is located in the Northern part of Thailand. When talking about Northern Food, it is completely different to Central cuisine, but have their own uniqueness.

At walking street, you can find hundreds of food stall, belows are some items that I’ve tried and they’re good. This time, I’ll share interesting and nice street food in Chiang Mai.

1.Grilled Crape with Sesame Paste - This snack can be found only in the Northern, hilltribes market. The texture is like Mochi, as it made from rice flour. The sweetness is from the sugary sesame paste. I super like it.

Price: 10-15 THB

Location: Kad Baan Hor behind Night Bazaar, only available on Friday morning.

2. Yunnan Noodle - It looks like ordinary noodle, but has minced meat with tomatoes that up the taste to the next level. The soup has rich flavor, lots of veggies, oil and spices are optional.

Price: 35-40 THB

  1. Kanom-Jeen (Nam-Ngeaw / Nam Ya / Nam Prik / etc.) - There are varieties of Kamon Jeen, or rice noodles. You can choose for spice base, sweet, coconutty, or up to your taste bud. Selection of free veggies are upto the restaurants.

Price: 30-50 THB

  1. Sausages : It sounds funny that sausages is one of the list, but there are variety of sausages, such as rice sausages, fermented pork sausages, rice vermicelli sausages, and so on. They usually served with ginger, and chilli. Some place serve fried, some grilled.

Location: Local market

  1. Nam Prik Noom - It’s grilled Chili mashed with garlic and other condiments. It is tasty but chilli. If you can’t bear with spice, please be aware. It is not as hot as it looks, but still leave the heat in your mouth. It usually served with pork scratching, and veggies.

Price: starts from 20 THB up to where you buy

Location: Local market, and restaurants

  1. Mala BBQ Skewer - Mala is chinese chili that makes your tongue numb, it’s famous amongst Thai people. It used for marinating the BBQ skewers, veggies and meat.

Price: starts from 10 THB

Location: Walking street, or local food stalls

  1. Khao Soi - Yellow noodles in spiced Coconut soup with Chicken or beef. This is not really spicy, but you can add chili, lime, and shallots to add more excitement to the dish. This is wel-known to all travelers that must try when visiting Chiang Mai, as well as other provinces in the North.

Price: Depends, starts from 35 THB

Location: there are many famous restaurants, and you can look for whole in the wall around the town.

  1. Traditional Northern dish - The local dishes that local people eat are endless, however the famous and well-known should be “Mashed Raw Jackfruit (Soup Kanoon)”, “Mixed-Leftover (Kaeng-Ho)”, and “Nam Prik Ong”. They are not spicy, and usually eat with boiled veggies and sticky rice.

Price: Starts from 10THB

Location: local market, and restaurants that serve Traditional menu.

  1. Vietnamese Egg Pan, and Bun - It sounds weird that Viet menu is in the list, but Northern and North-Eastern partner have influence from Vietnam, especially Food. Thai people like Pan-fried Eggs that add Sausages and pork to it. Also, Viet bun is fulfilling for breakie.

  2. Grilled Stinky Fermented Beans - The grilled stinky can be added to the weird food list, but the local people have it as comfort food. They usually have it with sticky rice. It can also be pork, instead of beans.

Price: starts from 10THB

Location: Local Market everywhere

The food in Chiang Mai, and Northern is still way more to explore, as it has influenced from hundreds Tribals in the North.
