Surrounded by the German Alps “Chiemgau”, the Chiemsee is the largest Bavarian lake. It deserves a whole day visit.
I’m advising you to leave your car at Priem, where you can admire an old steam train.
Depending on how fit you are, hire a bike to explore the lake, or go straight to the numerous and picturesque boats. With boat, you can access 6 different places, and maybe you will be a little bit confused, but it is quite simple and easy. Embark fearless.
Among several islands : the Herreninsel (Lord’s Island) where King Ludwig II builded the Herrenschloss, copy of Versaille’s castle.
From the jetty, you have to walk several km’s to reach the castle. But if you feel lazy, cart drawn by sturdy horses are waiting for you. Don’t miss them, the driver is encouraging them by cursing : "Go on, you lazy boy ! You 're sleeping or what ? " ; you will understand easily, even if you’re not fluent in German !

A smaller island, the Fraueninsel (Women’s Island) refers to a nun’s convent. Very nice promenade, lot of small houses, some boutiques selling souvenirs and lots of small restaurants and taverns. Ideal place to have lunch. If you like fish, you’re at the right place for all kind of river and lake fish.
Select another place to go by boat and enjoy some promenade, hiring a small boat (no license needed), swimming, or just resting. You will be surprised the day passed so quickly and it’s already time to take the boat back to Priem.
